Jürgen Werner (born March 31, 1942 in Steinbach-Hallenberg ; † May 2014 ) was a football player in the GDR major league for SC Motor and later FC Carl Zeiss Jena and once played in the GDR national football team .

career

In his home town of Steinbach-Hallenberg in southern Thuringia, Jürgen Werner went through the youth football teams of the local BSG Motor Steinbach-Hallenberg . As a junior player, he participated in the junior selection of the Suhl district, which was trained by his father Erwin. He passed the Abitur and began a teaching degree at Jena University. When he was allowed to play in the men's area in 1960 at the age of 18, the first team was represented in the then fifth-class district class Suhl. Werner performed so well there that the then number 1 in Thuringian football, SC Motor Jena, expressed interest in the young defender. In accordance with the regulations in GDR football, BSG Motor Steinbach-Hallenberg then “delegated” Werner to the Jena Club.

In Jena, Werner was initially used in the reserve team at the beginning of the 1961/62 season. It was not until September 27, 1964 that he was first used in a game for the Olympic Cup (transition round during the Olympic football tournament) in the SC Motor's league team as a left defender. The season 1967/68 had the first highlights in store for Werner. First his team, which has since been restructured to FC Carl Zeiss Jena, celebrated its second GDR championship ahead of schedule on May 25, 1968, the penultimate matchday. Werner, who is only 1.68 m tall, played a major role in this success, because at the end of the season he had played in 24 of the 26 point games and also contributed three goals as a standard defender. In addition to the championship, Jena also had the opportunity to win the GDR soccer cup . In the final on June 9, 1968 Werner was called up again as a left defender, but had to accept a 1: 2 defeat with his team against 1. FC Union Berlin . In the following years too, FC Carl Zeiss was one of the top teams in the league. The 1969/70 season saw the Jenaer again as champions, Werner had been in 14 point games. On September 6, 1970 Werner completed his only game in the GDR national team. In the 5-0 win over Poland he was in his regular position as left defender, in the following internationals the Dresdner Ganzera prevailed as an alternative to the regular Bernd Bransch , so Werner did not get any further international appointments. In 1971/72 he played in the major league for the last time, and tragically he was not in the team that won the GDR soccer cup for the second time in 1972. At the end of his league career he could look back on 119 points games, 22 national and 30 European cup games, in the 170 competitive games he scored 12 goals.

In the 1972/73 season Jürgen Werner helped out in the third team of FC Carl Zeiss, which played in the third-class district league Gera . He then worked in the coaching staff of FC and was mainly active in the youth field. From 1984 to 1988 he was assistant coach of the league team under Lothar Kurbjuweit . Then Werner trained the GDR league team from Robotron Sömmerda . In 2008, at the age of 66, Werner was still assistant coach for the A-Juniors at FC Carl Zeiss Jena. The club appointed him a member of the honorary council .
