II. GDR League 1961/62

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The II. DDR League 1961/62 was the seventh season of the II. DDR League, founded in 1955 . It was the third highest division in the German Football Association of the GDR (DFV) after the GDR Oberliga and the first GDR League .

Game operation

After the game year in football between 1955 and 1960 was identical to the calendar year, the DFV officials decided in 1961 to switch the game rhythm back to the old system (autumn-spring). The spring-autumn rhythm was originally adopted from the Soviet Union, where this rhythm was necessary due to the weather due to the severe winter. However, since the GDR did not have the same climatic conditions and the rhythm did not match the autumn-spring rhythm of the international European Cup competitions, the decision was finally revised again. Because of the longer playing time, the second GDR league was temporarily played in a triple round (39 game days).

The season was played in five seasons. Due to the increase in the GDR league from one to two seasons, three teams per season rose, only one was relegated.

Qualifying round for the 2nd GDR League

As in previous years, the district champions or clubs eligible for promotion rose from the 15 district leagues directly to the 2nd GDR league. By increasing the GDR league for the following season , four additional promotion places in the 2nd GDR league became available. In four seasons, the 15 runners-up of the district leagues played for the free places, in which the first placed rose.
