Aktivist Zwickau emerged in 1949 from SG Zwickau-Mitte , which was founded after the Second World War, and initially operated under the name BSG Aktivist Steinkohle Zwickau . The sports community, which always acted in the shadow of local rivals Horch Zwickau , was strengthened in 1950 by parts of the disbanded first east zone master SG Planitz . In 1951 another name change was made to activist "Karl Marx" Zwickau . The sponsoring company was the Zwickau Karl Marx factory .
On a sporting level, the West Saxons played in the Saxon State League until 1951. After the states were dissolved, activist Zwickau became a founding member of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district league . In the district league, Zwickau was consistently at the top of the table until 1957. While in the season of 1956, together with Motor Zschopau, the promotion to the third-class II. GDR league was still missed, this was achieved in 1957 with the West Saxon neighbor Wismut Plauen . Activist Zwickau was also able to play in higher table regions in the second GDR league, and in 1958 he was runner-up behind Dynamo Dresden . After two ninth places, activist succeeded in 1962 in front of the tied teams from Motor West Karl-Marx-Stadt and Motor Bautzen, the first promotion to the GDR league .
Activist Zwickau played in the second highest division of the GDR until the 1967/68 season. Subsequently, the GDR league team was dissolved. The football department of activist Zwickau merged with the GDR upper division Motor Zwickau to form the BSG Sachsenring Zwickau . Activist Zwickau's team was integrated into the newly founded club as the second team , analogous to other agencies such as Dynamo Hohenschönhausen , Dynamo Frankfurt or Lokomotive Cottbus . The second representation of Sachsenring Zwickau played in the GDR league until 1976, but was forced to relegate to the district league as a table seventh by decision of the DFV alongside Chemie Schwarza and all other second teams.
