Rainer Müller (soccer player)

Rainer Müller (born September 12, 1941 in Ehrenberg ; † February 28, 2001 in Berlin ) was a soccer player in the GDR . For ASK Vorwärts Berlin , with which he became champion in 1965, and with 1. FC Union Berlin , he played in the Oberliga , the top division of the GDR Football Association .

Athletic career

Müller began his footballer career with the rural company sports community (BSG) Traktor in Ehrenberg . In 1959 he committed himself to military service in the " National People's Army " and initially played for three years with the Vorwärts Dermbach army sports club. In 1962 Müller was delegated to the football center of the poor sport pollution control , the league club and GDR champion ASK Vorwärts Berlin. Müller played his first league game on the 5th day of the 1962/63 season. In the encounter between ASK and Leipzig rotation (2: 1) on September 20, 1962, he was replaced by Gerhard Vogt, who was not ready for actionused as a center forward. In the further course of the season, Müller remained a substitute striker and was only used in nine league games, in which, however, he scored four goals. In the following two seasons he was only used in three league games. With his only game in 1964/65, in which he scored two goals, he had a modest share in the championship win of the Berliners. He was then delegated to ASK and transferred to the GDR league team ASG Vorwärts Cottbus for the 1965/66 season .

When his army service ended in the spring of 1967, he returned to East Berlin and joined the senior division representative 1. FC Union there. Müller played his first games for Union in July and August 1967 in the six games of the Intertoto Cup 1967 . In the league games he was less successful, in 1967/68 he made eleven appearances, in 1968/69 he played only ten first division matches. The end of his career as a competitive footballer came in the summer of 1969. After Union had been relegated, Müller was only used in two cup games and on the first day of the GDR league season 1969/70. As a recreational footballer, he then played for the Berlin Sports Association Friedrichshagen in the fourth-class district class, and later in the district league .
