Ehrenberg is the largest area and most populous district of the city of Altenburg in the Thuringian district of Altenburger Land . The townscape is shaped by the palace complex .

geography

The former municipality of Ehrenberg with its nine locations extends about 5 km southeast of the district town over both sides of the Pleißental .

structure

The Altenburg district of Ehrenberg consists of the locations Ehrenberg, Lehnitzsch (incorporated in 1923), Modelwitz and Stünzhain (both incorporated on July 1, 1950), Greipzig (incorporated on January 1, 1963) and Mockzig with Zschaiga and Prisselberg , which on June 1 1965 were incorporated and Paditz with Zschechwitz , which were incorporated on September 7, 1973.

history

Ehrenberg was founded around 1200 as a fortified place to hold down the Slavic population of the Pleißenland . The oldest known name Herinberch from 1181 could be a patronymium (Castle of Her). In 1244 a noble family named Ehrenberg after the castle. This sex later handed over the possessions to the Thuringian Landgrave and joined the Teutonic Order . With the extinction of the burgraves of Altenburg in 1329, the Wettins became the feudal lords of the Pleißenland and thus also of Ehrenberg. The castle was pledged several times and also rebuilt. The Schmertzing family had a castle built last, which was rebuilt from 1878 to 1880. At the end of the 19th century , in the course of a division of the domain property of the ducal house of Saxony-Altenburg , the property of the Altenburg wool manufacturer Bernhard Schmidt passed in 1878 . After 1945 the building served a farm and is now being gradually restored.

The place belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg , which was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies from the 16th century due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603), Duchy of Saxony- Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). When the Ernestine duchies were reorganized in 1826, the place came back to the duchy of Saxony-Altenburg. After the administrative reform in the duchy, it belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). From 1918 the village belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was added to the State of Thuringia in 1920. In 1922 it came to the district of Altenburg .

During the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the existing states were dissolved and the districts were redesigned. Thus, the community came Ehrenberg with the district Altenburg at the Leipzig district , since 1990 as a county belonged to Altenburg Thuringia and opened in 1994 Altenburger in the district of the country. During the GDR era, the most important companies in the area were LPG Mockzig and part of the VEB Feinkost Leipzig, which still exists today as a private vinegar and mustard factory.

Ehrenberg and the nine affiliated towns were incorporated into Altenburg on July 14, 1993. Since then it has been the largest district of Altenburg.

Buildings

The Ehrenberg Castle from the street side.

The Ehrenberg Castle , which was first mentioned in 1244 as a castle with knight's seat, is now a landscape-shaping palace complex of the late 19th century. After numerous changes of ownership and multiple renovations, the previous building was used as a cotton manufacture from 1805 to 1816, and later as a granary for the Kammergut. Structural remains of the dilapidated building complex were partially demolished after 1860. After 1875, the Altenburger Kommerzienrat B. Schmidt acquired the property and commissioned the Dresden architects Schilling and Gräbner in 1878 with the construction of a country residence designed in the neo-renaissance style. Thus, older components such as the round tower from the 16th century, some farm buildings, the park and remnants of the medieval fortifications were preserved. After Schmidt's death, the property passed to the Altenburg chamberlain from Bloedau .

The center of the village of Stünzhain is designated as a monument ensemble. Renovated half-timbered houses can be found there, such as the rectory. The church, which burned down and rebuilt in 1584, with structural elements from the previous building, has a Baroque design inside, dating from around 1720, like the patron's box or the organ from 1726.

The district of Paditz is best known for the Paditzer Schanzen area natural monument, where exposed red sandstone surrounds a small basin. There is also a stone arch bridge from 1531, which was part of the trade route to Bohemia .

Sports

The sports club "Blau Gelb" Ehrenberg currently plays in the 1st Radball Bundesliga.
