Richard Teichmann (born December 23, 1868 in Lehnitzsch near Altenburg , † June 12, 1925 in Berlin ) was a German chess master .

Youth and Studies

Teichmann already lost his right eye at a young age. Since he couldn't stand artificial eyes, he always played chess with a blindfold.

Teichmann studied philology at the universities of Jena and Berlin. He first drew attention to himself in chess when he won a tournament of the Berlin Chess Society in 1890/91 .

Stay in England

From 1892 to 1908 he chose London as his residence. Here he was in 1892 in the tournament of the "Simpson Divan" shared second. He won against Rudolf Loman 4-0 (+4 = 1 −0). In 1900 he won the London tournament before Blackburne , Gunsberg and Mason . Further successes were his victory in 1901 in the five-master tournament of the "Simpson Divan", second place in 1904 in the tournament "City of London" (behind Napier ) and his victory in the "Rice Gambit Tournament" of the "Metropolitan Club".

International success

Teichmann played his first international tournament in Leipzig in 1894 . Here he was third behind Tarrasch and Paul Lipke .

He won a major tournament only once in his life. That was in Karlsbad in 1911 , where he left many well-known masters behind. He also won competitions against Frank Marshall , Jacques Mieses and Rudolf Spielmann . A match against Alexander Alekhine ended in a draw.

Often, because of his preference for peaceful draws, he only came in 5th place - the last place for which there was usually prize money . That is why he was given the nickname "Richard V". This money was just enough to finance his modest living. In 1912 he was third behind Oldřich Duras and Akiba Rubinstein at the 18th Congress of the German Chess Federation in Breslau .

His best historical rating was 2744. This he reached in January 1912. He was temporarily at number 5 in the world rankings. Teichmann was considered an excellent opening theorist and endgame expert . He died in 1925 after a long kidney disease.
