Under footsie means the playful making physical contact with the feet. In particular, it is a form of flirtation in which affection is signaled by gently touching the foot under a table. In Austrian , “füßeln” also means “to trip up”.

The fiddling is often done for an initial and hidden physical contact between strangers, for example by fiddling under a table. Feet is a popular means of establishing physical contact between people who were previously only platonic friends or to flirt with each other in secret if one of the partners is otherwise in a relationship. 

Often there is fiddling under the table, women and men alike do this. Other popular places include the hot tub . The secrecy of what is happening means a special thrill for many people who do not walk .

In 1987, the American comic author Robert Crumb published "Footsy", an autobiographical comic on the subject of feet.
