Athletic career

1. FC Magdeburg

For his first use in the Magdeburg first division team, he came in the cup game at Stahl Thale on October 14, 1978. Then he had to wait sixteen months before he was called up for the first time in a league point game. During this time he was used in the junior league. On the 14th matchday of the 1979/80 season, February 23, 1980, he replaced in the encounter Wismut Aue - 1. FCM (0-0) the not ready Klaus Decker as a right midfielder. Wittke ended this season with a total of ten league games. He made his breakthrough as a regular player in the 1982/83 season, in which he played 20 of the total of 26 league point games.

On June 4, 1983, he celebrated the greatest success of his sporting career by winning the GDR soccer cup. In the 4-0 final victory over FC Karl-Marx-Stadt , he expanded the Elbe city's leadership with the second Magdeburg goal. Wittke played most of his season point games in the 1984/85 season, when he was used 23 times. At the end of the 1987/88 season there were 149 league games with 13 goals on his account, plus 21 national cup games (3 goals) and four appearances in the European Cup.

1. FC Union

In the summer of 1988 Wittke moved from 1. FC Magdeburg to the league competitor 1. FC Union Berlin . But since the FCM refused to release, Wittke was banned for six months. It was only on matchday 13, December 3, 1988, that he was used for the first time in the league team in the match 1. FC Union - Dynamo Dresden (1: 3). He scored the 1: 1 in the meantime, but then missed a penalty. During his first union season, Wittke was used in a total of 14 league point games. Union ended the season as relegated, so Wittke had to play in the second-rate GDR league for a year . There he played 23 of the 34 point games, but missed promotion to the league at the end of the season.

Eisenhüttenstadt, Jena and Leipzig

Wittke therefore joined the Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl at the beginning of the 1990/91 season , which had already played in the major league for a year. He was used in 24 of the 26 point games, but could not prevent the Eisenhüttenstadt team from missing qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga with rank 9. Wittke took this as an opportunity to leave the EFC after a year and join FC Carl Zeiss Jena , which had qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga. In Jena, too, Wittke immediately became a regular player and played 100 second division games in three seasons from 1991 to 1994. In 1994 Jena was relegated to the third division regional league and Wittke turned to VfB Leipzig , which had managed to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga. From 1994 to 1996 he was used again in two seasons a total of 25 times in point games, then Wittke ended his career as a competitive athlete in June 1996 after suffering a fibula fracture a month earlier.
