Claus Kreul (born May 26, 1944 in Erlbach im Vogtland ) was a football player in the GDR major league for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and Wismut Aue . He later coached various GDR league teams and acted as a selection coach for the DFV until its dissolution.

Athletic career

Claus Kreul played for BSG Traktor Erlbach from 1955 to 1963 and then moved to the upper division FC Karl-Marx-Stadt . On May 30, 1965, the 24th matchday of the league, he played as a right defender for the first time a game in the top division of the GDR. The 1.72 m tall defender won the GDR championship with FCK in 1967 , but only played nine of the 26 point games. Until he left Karl-Marx-Stadt, he was used in 51 league games over six seasons, including two European Cup games. At the beginning of the 1969/70 season, Kreul moved to district rivals Wismut Aue . By the end of his active career in 1972 he came there again to 33 league appearances, so that he can have a total of 84 league games. As a regular defender, he scored two goals for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt in his senior league time.

Coaching career

In the period that followed, Kreul, a trained woodwind instrument maker and qualified sports teacher, worked as a soccer coach. His first station was the second division Wismut Gera , which he could not help in the 1975/76 season to the hoped-for league promotion. In the summer of 1976 Kreul took over the relegated league Energie Cottbus , but could not achieve the goal of promotion there in two years.

Nevertheless, in the spring of 1982 he got the chance to train a league team for the first time with 1. FC Magdeburg . He took over the team during the current season after the 18th matchday as the successor to the dismissed Klaus Urbanczyk . But even he could not bring the FCM into the top tier of the league as hoped, so that the Magdeburg team were not represented in the European Cup for the first time in ten years. The league season 1982/83 was not better for the club, as in the previous year only sixth place was achieved. In the GDR Cup competition , however, Kreul managed to lead 1. FC Magdeburg to their seventh cup win. After two more seasons, each with fifth league places, Kreul's activity in Magdeburg was ended after the 1984/85 season.

In the summer of 1985, Kreul took over the upper division FC Hansa Rostock as coach. After a 10th place in the previous season, the goal could only be to stay in the league. This did not succeed, after the 1985/86 season Hansa was determined to be relegated, and Kreul was replaced by Werner Voigt after only one season . Kreul were often accused of outdated training methods, which were mainly characterized by hard fitness units.

Afterwards Kreul worked for the DFV . For example, the GDR junior selection trained in the youth competitions of friendship in the summer before the fall . In the Gera district he took 3rd place with the U-18.
