Haffenrode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Haffenrode also Haffenrath is a desolate place in the Schmallenberg area , in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The place was about one and a half kilometers above the mouth of the Gleierbach in the Lenne , between Gleidorf and Fredeburg . In 1303 the court was mentioned as Curtis the Lords of the County . Around 1370, a citizen of Fredeburg and his wife gave half of their Hove tho Haffenrode to the Grafschaft monastery for a memorial foundation . The place was probably already a desert at that time. From around 1500 the lands were farmed from Schmallenberg.

A courtyard with a chapel was built nearby in 1832 .

Like many other places, the place fell victim to the great desolation process in the late Middle Ages . It must have been a creeping, slow process. The downfall of this urban settlement is probably connected with the development of the urban center of Schmallenberg. Another reason was plague epidemics and the need of the residents to seek refuge in the city.
