Herbert Rettensteiner

Herbert Rettensteiner (born August 26, 1946 in Schwarzach im Pongau ) is a former Austrian national soccer player .

Career

The goalkeeper Herbert Rettensteiner began his career at the then second division SK Bischofshofen in the Regionalliga West , from where he created in 1967 for FC Wacker Innsbruck to Tyrol in the National League changed. There Herbert Rettensteiner soon became number one in goal and was able to celebrate his first major successes in the 1970/71 season by winning the ÖFB Cup in 1970 against the Linz ASK and the Austrian championship . So he came on April 12, 1970 for the first time against Czechoslovakia to a use in the Austrian national team , when he was brought in half time for Wilhelm Harreither by Leopold Šťastný .

In Tyrol, however, they wanted to go higher and decided to merge the two first division clubs Wattens and Wacker Innsbruck to form SSW Innsbruck. This is how Wattens goalkeeper Friedl Koncilia joined Rettensteiner's team. Although he was able to become Austrian champion again in 1971/72 , but slowly became the second choice behind Koncilia, where he also alternated in goal with Koncilia in the national team. Herbert Rettensteiner left SSW Innsbruck in 1972 and went to SK VÖEST Linz .

At the Linz factory club Herbert Rettensteiner surprisingly won his third championship title in 1973/74 , even before SSW Innsbruck. During this time he again had a regular place in the national team and also played in the decisive World Cup qualifier against Sweden in Gelsenkirchen in '74 . Austria had finished the group stage with the Scandinavians on the same point and goal, so this game was necessary. Sweden won 2-1, with Herbert Rettensteiner unlucky enough to owe a penalty. Nevertheless, Leopold Šťastný continued to cling to him for the time being. Herbert Rettensteiner thanked with strong performances against Brazil and Italy , in which he did not allow a goal.

After Herbert Rettensteiner was replaced in Linz by Erwin Fuchsbichler in the gate, he went to Salzburg Austria in 1975 , where he played the following seven seasons in the 1st division and 2nd division . Although he had to relegate to the 2nd division with the Salzburg team in 1976/77 , this was followed by a successful career end with the immediate promotion and reaching the ÖFB Cup final in 1980, which just went to Wiener Austria . He later worked as a goalkeeper coach at Austria Salzburg and as a coach at SV Grödig .
