Dietmar "Didi" Berchtold (born August 6, 1974 in Bludenz ) is a former Austrian soccer player who was active from 1994 to 2010. He played in central midfield and had excellent technique. Since July 2016 he has been looking after the second team of SC Rheindorf Altach in the Regionalliga West . Berchtold has the UEFA A license.

Career

Berchtold played up to U18 in the junior performance center in Dornbirn , Vorarlberg and was a U-15 and U-16 national player for Austria, with Paul Gludovaz as a coach. His first professional station was the traditional club Wiener Sportklub , which at that time was still in the top division. In 1994 he came to Vorwärts Steyr , where he was a regular player and top performer right away. After two years he moved to local rivals LASK Linz to stay in the upper house. Berchtold's trainer was the German starter Friedel Rausch . In the summer of 1997 he made the jump to Germany to SV Waldhof Mannheim under coach Uwe Rapolder . The next step in his career followed after just one year - a move to the top Greek club PAOK Saloniki . The coach of the Greeks at that time was the footballer of the century Oleg Blochin . After a half series he moved to Apollon Athens . After a year, the globetrotter was drawn back to Germany. At the 2nd league top club Alemannia Aachen , he advanced to a high performer between 1999 and 2001. In the first season, Aachen only narrowly missed promotion to the German Bundesliga. He then moved to VfL Bochum , where he was under contract until 2003. In 2002, the Vorarlberger managed to get promoted to the Bundesliga with Bochum  - the heartbeat of promotion went down in history when Bochum scored the decisive goal eight minutes before the end. And so the FSV Mainz 05 to coach Jürgen Klopp fell into the valley of tears. Bochum returned furiously to the Bundesliga, led the table in the meantime and was in fifth place during the winter break. Berchtold was no longer used at the time, however, and therefore moved back to his home in Vorarlberg for the Austrian Bundesliga club SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz . Bregenz was in last place at the winter break of the 2002/03 season, Berchtold was considered a great hope - and did not disappoint the Bregenz team. Vorarlberg managed to stay up. In the 2003/04 season, the club made it to fifth place, and thus in the UI Cup . Until the 2014/15 season (3rd place for SCR Altach ) this was the best placement of a Vorarlberg club in the Bundesliga.

In 2004 Berchtold moved again to Upper Austria, this time to SV Ried , where he was promoted to the Bundesliga in the first year and was captain of the Innviertel team in the second season. Then Berchtold went back home to SC Austria Lustenau , where he left the club as captain after six months. In 2007 Berchtold moved to the Grazer AK . Berchtold was playing with the number 12 back then - because his transfer was financed by the GAK fan club. He stayed until the financial end and forced relegation of the "Red Devils" Graz. His last professional position was the then unknown Regionalliga-West-Klub SV Grödig . With this club he made it to the second highest Austrian league - the ADEG First League . Berchtold was then appointed honorary captain for life at SV Grödig.

Trainer

Berchtold has been working as a trainer since 2010. In his first season he was promoted to the Vorarlbergliga, the highest pure amateur league in the state, as player-coach with Rätia Bludenz. In the 2011/12 season he managed to stay in the league with Bludenz, but then into the junior division and became a trainer at the high-performance youth center in Bludenz , Vorarlberg. In addition, Berchtold made a name for himself as an expert at "NEUE am Sonntag", where he regularly analyzed the performance of the Vorarlberg professional clubs SCR Altach , Austria Lustenau and FC Lustenau in a column . In 2013 he became the coach of the Vorarlberg U-15 national team. In his first season he was Austrian U-15 champion in the ÖFB youth league ahead of Austria Vienna. In 2014 he remained in the team's U-16 coach. In the summer of 2015, Berchtold switched to FC St. Gallen as a youth coach . He gave up this post in September 2015 to become Damir Canadi's assistant coach at SC Rheindorf Altach . In the summer of 2016 he took over the club's second team in the Regionalliga West as head coach.
