Football World Cup 1938 / Round of 16

At the 1938 World Cup , which took place in France and was the third edition of a World Cup , there were nine matches in the round of 16 because Sweden reached the quarter-finals after Austria withdrew without a fight and because the games between Switzerland and the team of the German Empire and between Cuba and Romania initially ended in a draw and therefore had to be repeated. The following games were played in the round of 16:

Sweden - Austria without a fight

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich, a large German team started at the 1938 World Cup in France. Austria's place remained vacant. This reduced the number of participants in the World Cup finals to 15 and Sweden received a bye .
