Ion Bogdan (born March 6, 1915 in Bucharest , † July 10, 1992 ) was a Romanian football player , coach and lawyer . He played a total of 150 games in the highest Romanian soccer league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1938 World Cup.

Career as a player

At the age of 13, Bogdan started playing football at Unirea Tricolor Bucharest . In season 1933/34 he moved into the first team and made his debut on October 8, 1933 in an away win against România Cluj in the Divizia A . It was not until the 1935/36 season that he developed into a regular player, but left the club at the end of the season and joined local rivals Rapid Bucharest . In contrast to Unirea Tricolor, Rapid had the potential to play in the Romanian championship. At Rapid, Bogdan developed into a dangerous attacker and made a name for himself as a dribbler. In November 1937 he left Rapid without informing his association to look for an employer in France. In 1938 he played for Red Star Paris for a short time , but then returned to Rapid Bucharest. In the 1940/41 season he was together with Valeriu-Sony Niculescu top scorer with 21 goals. He never won the championship. Instead, he won the Romanian Cup six times in a row with Rapid in the years 1937 to 1942. He also scored 3 goals in 9 Mitropapokal appearances.

After the Second World War , Bogdan joined Rapid Bucharest again, which has now taken on under the name CFR Bucharest . In the autumn of 1946, however, he went abroad and looked for a new challenge at the Hungarian club MTK Budapest . As early as the summer of 1947 he went to Italy for AS Bari in the Serie A , where he was used for the first time in the game against AS Roma on February 29, 1948 and ended his active career after another three championship games in June 1948.

National team

Bogdan played a total of 12 games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored three goals. He made his debut on July 8, 1937 against Lithuania , when he came on after ten minutes for Grațian Sepi and scored his first goal a few minutes later. A year later, national coach Constantin Rădulescu appointed him to his squad for the 1938 World Cup in France and used him in the replay against Cuba .

Career as a coach

Bogdan returned to Romania in 1950. In addition to his profession as a lawyer, he also worked as a trainer. Among other things, he looked after the lower-class clubs Dunărea Giurgiu , Ospătari Bucharest and Semănătoarea Bucharest. In March 1966 Bogdan left Romania for Lebanon, where he coached Racing Beirut and Al-Shabiba Mazraa each to a championship title.
