Bernardus Joannes "Bertus" Caldenhove (born January 19, 1914 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ; † July 30, 1983 , ibid) was a Dutch football player . He played for the Amsterdam club DWS and was used 25 times in the national team.

Career

society

The regular left-back Caldenhove played for the first time in the first team of DWS at the age of 17. Just one year later he became team captain at the club, to which he remained loyal throughout his footballing life. In 1935, 1938 and 1939 he was with DWS champion of the Eerste Klasse West , the top division at the time; in the finals for the Dutch championship, however, the team could not prevail.

National team

In autumn 1934 the selection committee of the KNVB appointed Caldenhove for the first time to the circle of the national team. For two games, however, he had to make do with the place on the bench before he took the position of Ajacieden Jan van Diepenbeek on March 31, 1935 and thus came to his first appearance in the Oranje jersey. There was a 4-2 win against Belgium at the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium , which Beb Bakhuys only secured with three goals in the final quarter of an hour after falling 2-0 down.

Caldenhove had established himself in the team with this match and also had a regular place in the next games next to Run van Sjef and later Mauk Weber or Cor Wilders . Among other things, he was in the 6-1 victory of the Dutch amateurs over the professional team from France in the Paris Prinzenparkstadion in January 1936, in the 2-2 in the Düsseldorf Rheinstadion against the team of the German Reich a year later, in the successful World Cup qualification in 1937 / 38 and at the end after extra time against the ČSR in the round of 16 of the World Cup in France in the Elftal . Despite the unfortunate elimination against one of the favorites, there was talk of a “great” Dutch team for the first time in those years, which in addition to Caldenhove players of international stature such as Bakhuys, Kick Smit , Leen Vente , Puck van Heel , goalkeeper Leo Halle and later the young Bertus de Harder belonged. Caldenhove made 25 games in a row, the last of which he was on March 17, 1940, again against Belgium, for the first time team captain when the Dutch lost 7-1 at the Bosuil Stadium in Antwerp . Previously, he had already been captain in the anniversary game on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the KNVB on December 10, 1939 in De Kuip , a 5-2 win against Belgium, which is not counted as an official international match.

Due to a knee injury, he could not play the next two games; thereafter, the invasion of the troops of the German Reich ended the international game operation in the Netherlands. In December 1940, Caldenhove underwent an operation on his injured knee. Caldenhove played for regional selections during the war and was active for DWS for several years after the war. In 1946 he was appointed to the national team several times, but he did not get another assignment; Henk van der Linden , who was five years his junior, had won his regular place .

Away from football

Caldenhove lived and worked in his native Amsterdam until his death. Since May 1939 he was married to Cor van Alphen. He was the owner of a tobacco shop on the Haarlemmerstraat in Amsterdam.
