The Christian Verlag GmbH is a German publishing company based in Munich . The publisher has been part of the GeraNova Bruckmann publishing house since summer 2008 . The managing directors are Clemens Schüssler, Henry Allgaier and Claus W. Küster.

founding

According to the publisher's website, Christian Verlag was founded in 1947 in Bad Nauheim, Hesse, and published mostly psychosocial titles for almost thirty years. Its founder was the sculptor, publisher and author Knud Christian Knudsen , who had previously been involved in founding the Pontes publishing house in Berlin-Wilmersdorf .

Its program was based initially on re-education program of the Western Allies . Books describing the Allies' views on various areas of life were published, as well as accounts of the USA and Great Britain . In 1949 Knudsen became the first employee and literary director of the newly founded German Coordination Council (DKR) of the Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation , based in Bad Nauheim. As a result, publications from the American National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ) and the movement for a National Brotherhood Week found their way into the publishing program, for example writings by Everett R. Clinchy in the translation by Hermann Ebeling , who, as a former emigrant, worked for the NCCJ from 1950 and was its representative in Germany from 1951 to 1955. In 1952 Ebeling co-founded the Week of Fraternity .

From re-education to lifestyle

The publishing house was run by Doris Knudsen, the founder's wife, until 1978 and then sold to the Time Warner Group . "The fundamental change in the program was heralded in February 1978 when the publishing house was taken over by Time Life Books, a subsidiary of the Time Warner Group." As a result of the new ownership structure, the focus of the program developed towards connoisseur and lifestyle topics.

From 2001 to 2008 the publishing house became independent again and was part of the Prestel Publishing Group during this time .

He has been part of the GeraNova Bruckmann publishing house since summer 2008 . Christian Verlag has already received awards from the French World Cookbook organization and medals from the German Gastronomic Academy (GAD) . In 2018, Romana Echensperger's "From because of light and lovely" was awarded the gold medal of the German Gastronomic Academy as the best book in the "Drinks" category.

From 2009 to 2015 Christian Verlag published the magazines LandIdee, LandIdee Wohnen & Deko, LandApotheke, LandFrisch and LandGarten in cooperation with Gong Verlag . In addition to its focus on cooking and gardening as well as living and lifestyle, the publisher published the Gault-Millau restaurant and wine guide until June 2016 .

On September 1, 2018, Christian Verlag took over the book program of Christophorus Verlag from OZ Verlag and thus expanded its book program to include the advisory creative segment (including handicrafts, handicrafts, creative design, art and decorating)
