Fortunatus A. Nwachukwu (born May 10, 1960 in Ntigha , Abia , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian clergyman, Roman Catholic archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Fortunatus Nwachukwu studied philosophy and theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary , later St. Joseph's Major Seminary in Ikot Ekpene . He was ordained a priest for the Nigerian diocese of Aba on June 17, 1984 and then worked as a pastor in Ibeku-Umuahia and as a student chaplain in the College of Agriculture Umudike and Umudike Campus of Alvan-Ikoku College of Education . He was also involved in training and was dean and vice-rector of the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Umuahia .

From 1986 Fortunatus Nwachukwu studied biblical studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute , at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Pontifical University Urbaniana as well as at the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . He also studied at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . He graduated in Biblical Theology and Textual Criticism of the Old Testament. In systematic theology , he was the focus of African theology doctorate in theology doctorate with a thesis on the relationship of the Holy See and the State of Israel to the doctor of canon law .

In 1994 he joined the Curia’s diplomatic service . He was secretary of the apostolic nunciatures in Ghana , Togo and Benin in Accra as well as in the nunciatures in Paraguay , Algeria and Tunisia . He has also served as an advisor to the Holy See's Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations and other international organizations. He then worked in the Vatican State Secretariat . Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on July 8, 1995 and the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on August 4, 2004 .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on April 9, 2007 to succeed Tommaso Caputo as Chief of Protocol of the Holy See in the State Secretariat.

Nwachukwu has published several books and academic articles. In addition to English , he speaks French , German , Spanish , Italian , Arabic and modern Hebrew .

On November 12, 2012 Benedict XVI appointed him. the Titular Archbishop of Aquaviva and the apostolic nuncio in Nicaragua . The episcopal ordination received his Benedict XVI. on January 6, 2013 in St. Peter's Basilica ; Co-consecrators were Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB and Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski .

On November 4, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Trinidad and Tobago , Antigua and Barbuda , Barbados , Dominica , Jamaica , Saint Kitts and Nevis , St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana as well as Apostolic Delegate in the Antilles . On February 27, 2018, he was also appointed Apostolic Nuncio in St. Lucia , Grenada and the Bahamas . On March 9 of the same year he was also appointed Nuncio in Suriname and on September 8 of the same year as Nuncio in Belize .
