Georg Braulik

Georg Braulik OSB (born June 20, 1941 in Vienna , born as Peter Braulik , religious name Georg ) is an Austrian Roman Catholic theologian and emeritus professor for Old Testament biblical studies .

Life

After attending the Schottengymnasium in Vienna , Braulik entered the Schotten Abbey in 1959 . From 1960 to 1965 he studied at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna and was ordained a priest in 1965. In 1966 he received his doctorate in Vienna with a dissertation in new church history , before continuing his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome from 1966 to 1969 and there in 1973 with an Old Testament dissertation on Dr. PhD in re biblica . From 1969 he was assistant and lecturer at the Institute for Old Testament Biblical Studies of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna, where he also completed his habilitation in 1975. In 1976 he became associate professor and head of the newly established department for biblical theology . From 1977 to 1980 he worked as secretary of the congress of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament , which took place in Vienna in 1980. From 1989 to 2004 he was a full university professor and since 1999 he has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 2004 he was awarded the Honorary Prize of the Cardinal Innitzer Study Fund; he had already received the sponsorship award in 1976. In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main , in 2013 he received an honorary doctorate from the Benedictine University Sant'Anselmo in Rome, and in 2014 the Wilhelm Hartel Prize .

Georg Braulik is also a scientific advisor and the author of textbooks for several television programs for Austrian Broadcasting and the author of numerous radio programs. He has been visiting professor at various theological faculties in and outside Europe on several occasions. From 1978 to 1998 he led many “scientific excursions” to the countries of the Middle East. So far, Braulik has published over 20 monographs and around 170 mainly biblical articles in specialist journals, some of which have been translated into ten world languages. He is editor of the Austrian Biblical Studies . Together with Norbert Lohfink he created the online database Analytical Bibliography on Deuteronomy .
