Cölestin Wolfsgruber OSB (born May 14, 1848 in Großalm , Upper Austria ; † November 26, 1924 in Vienna ; actually Johann Nepomuk Wolfsgruber ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic church historian and court preacher .

Life

After attending the Schottengymnasium in Vienna in 1869, Wolfsgruber entered the Schotten Abbey and studied theology at the University of Vienna from 1870 to 1874 . In 1874 he was ordained a priest. From 1879 he taught religion at the Schottengymnasium, from 1882 also history and geography . In the monastery he was entrusted with the functions of the monastery archivist (from 1886) and the monastery librarian (from 1894). In 1901, Wolfsgruber was appointed court preacher at the Vienna Court Chapel as the successor to his fellow brother Clemens Kickh , an office he held until 1920. From 1903 to 1919 he was university professor for church history and patrology at the University of Vienna, and in 1907/1908 and 1911/1912 he was dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty .

Wolfsgruber's numerous scientific publications cover a wide field and range from patristic texts and discussions about the “Imitatio Christi” to biographies of people from the 18th and 19th centuries. Especially as a source collection, his works have lasting value even today.

Since 1910 he was an honorary member of the Catholic student association KÖStV Kürnberg Vienna.
