Wilhelm Antoni Góra (after 1945: Wilhelm Gora, nickname Boy ) (born January 18, 1916 in Beuthen , † May 21, 1975 ) was a Polish football player .

Career

Góra began his career in the Bytom suburb of Scharley (Szarley) with the local club Strzelec Szarley . Then the midfielder moved via Pogoń Katowice ( Kattowitz ) to Cracovia Krakow , where he was de facto active as a full professional (nominally he was employed in a company) and where he made his debut in the Polish football league in 1934. In total, he completed 134 games for Cracovia. A year later he made his debut in the Polish national team and was part of the squad for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , which finished 4th. At the 1938 World Cup in France, he played the only Polish game, the legendary 5-6 against Brazil . He remained a national player until 1939 and played 16 games. After the beginning of the Second World War he signed the German People's List and played for the DTSG Krakow police sports club , the successor club to Wisła Krakow , which was banned by the Germans .

But soon he had to go to war as a soldier in the Wehrmacht and was captured by the British in Italy. Since he was a Polish citizen before the war, he was given the opportunity to join the 2nd Corps of the Polish Army under General Władysław Anders . After 1945 Góra wanted to return to his homeland. Attempts to gain a foothold in Szczecin failed, as did his return to Krakow because of his biography during the war. Góra thus settled in the Federal Republic of Germany , where he lived until his death. In the post-war period he still played at 07 Hameln and VfB Mühlburg .
