Auguste "Gustl" Jordan , actually August Jordan , sometimes also Gustav Jordan (born February 21, 1909 in Linz , Austria-Hungary , † May 17, 1990 in Château-Thierry ), was an Austrian and French football player and coach .

Career as a player

From youth player to amateur state champion

August Jordan started his playing career like many young soccer players in the Upper Austrian capital in the 1920s on the Linz parade field. From there he moved to the youth team of the Linz ASK and due to his talent was already used as a liaison striker in the combat team at the age of 15 . His specialty were headers, he was well trained, shot with both legs, showed an overview, gave precise templates and was a very good technician. With the Linzers he won the Upper Austrian state championship several times and in the 1930/31 season after a 1-1 away win with a 2-1 win against the Grazer AK in Linz, the Austrian amateur state championship, although he was not used in the second leg. In the following season he played in both finals for the amateur championship, but lost with his team to the Grazer AK in both games (0: 2 and 2: 4).

Successful interlude in Vienna

In 1932 Jordan moved during the current season to the then Viennese first division club Floridsdorfer AC in the top professional Austrian division. In the remaining games of the season 1931-32 he scored 16 goals for Floridsdorf and could in the scoring charts surprising fourth place behind Anton Schall , Franz Weselik and Matthias Kaburek place. This performance was all the more remarkable because the Floridsdorfers always played against relegation from the first division both this season and the following season, in which Gusti Jordan scored 9 goals before moving to Paris.

Change to France

After receiving an offer from Paris in 1933 , the 1.79 m tall and 77 kg heavy runner and center forward went to France with Rudolf Hiden and played at the Racing Club de Paris from 1933 to 1945 . With this club he won the 1936 French championship of Division 1 and celebrated by winning the Coupe de France and the Double. With the cup wins in 1939, 1940 and 1945, the native of Linz celebrated three more major titles in his career. It is noteworthy that with Rudi Hiden (1933–1940) and Henri Hiltl (1939–1940), two other great footballers with Austrian roots played at the capital city. Jordan matured in France to a center forward of international class and played an incredible 13 years for the Racing Club de Paris in the then French Division 1.

With the Équipe Tricolore at the 1938 World Cup

From 1937 he was considered a naturalized Frenchman, in 1938 Jordan finally accepted French citizenship and received his first call-up to the French national team in the same year . At the 1938 World Cup , which was held in France, Auguste Jordan was used in both games, but in the runner's position . The French failed after a 3-1 against Belgium in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Italy with 1: 3. Overall, Jordan brought it between 1938 and 1945 to 16 games and one goal for the Équipe Tricolore and was at times their team captain. It is interesting to note that in the game against Portugal on January 28, 1940 in the Prinzenparkstadion in Paris , three former Austrians, Jordan, Hiden and Hiltl, played for the French national team. On December 6, 1945, Gusti Jordan played in his last selection game for the French national team for the first and only time against his former compatriots. The Austrians won the match in Vienna 4-1. To date, only five players from Racing Club de Paris have recorded more international matches than Gusti Jordan. Jordan, on the other hand, was never called up for the Austrian national soccer team , but this was due to the fact that legionnaires working abroad were generally not included in the national team at that time.

Career as a coach

After trying his hand at coaching Épinal while he was still playing at RC Paris , he finally switched to coaching after his career as a player and looked after the teams of Red Star Paris, Olympique Marseille and Racing Paris, among others. With 1. FC Saarbrücken he reached the final of the German championship in 1952. He celebrated his greatest success as a coach with the team from Standard Liège , which he led to win the Belgian championship in 1963.
