Frank Wels (born February 21, 1909 in Ede , † February 16, 1982 ) was a Dutch football player . The striker played for Gorinchem's GVV Unitas from the late 1920s to the 1940s . From 1931 to 1938 he was used 36 times in the national team.

life and career

Wels made his debut in 1926 as a right winger at the second-class GVV Unitas, with whom he won the championship in the tweede class in 1928 as a 19-year-old with a 3-2 win in Rotterdam against the Feijenoorder club Overmaas . Although his club remained second class, Wels was a permanent part of the Dutch national team from 1931 onwards. In May in Belgium he was part of the squad; at the next game on June 14, 1931 in Copenhagen he came as well as Mauk Weber against Denmark to his debut in Orange . The small but quick flanker - at 1.63 meters he was the second smallest player in the history of the Dutch national team - brought this ability especially to play with Beb Bakhuys . In the game against Belgium on March 11, 1934, the "red devils" were leading after just one minute; the pressure to equalize was rewarded in the 15th minute when Bakhuys headed a Wels cross while falling. Header goals of this type were subsequently referred to in the Netherlands as kopbal a la Bakhuys ("Kopfball à la Bakhuys"). The Dutch won the game 9-3 thanks to another goal from Bakhuys, two goals from debutant Kick Smit and a five-pack from Leen Vente in his second international match.

At the 1934 World Cup in Italy , he was in the team that was eliminated in the round of 16 against Switzerland . He had to wait until 1935 for his first goal in the national dress. Again it was a game against Denmark, this time at home ; Wels contributed the third goal to the 3-0 victory. Wels also took part in the 1938 World Cup in France ; the 0: 3 against Czechoslovakia in the round of 16 was his 36th and last game in the Elftal - the last 30 of these international matches were in a row, in total he missed only two matches during his playing time for the KNVB selection. He was able to score five goals during this time. In his club career he spent a short time with Feijenoord , but since he did not like traveling to Rotterdam, he returned after a year to Unitas - the club for which he laced his football boots for a total of 25 years and with which he has been with over the years In 1944 and 1946 he was again master of the second class.

After his active time, Frank Wels ran a cafeteria named after him in Gorinchemer Arkelstraat.
