Domingos Antônio da Guia (born November 19, 1912 in Rio de Janeiro ; † May 18, 2000 ibid) was a Brazilian soccer player who took part in the 1938 World Cup with the national team of his home country .

Career

Domingos da Guia began his career at Bangu AC in Rio de Janeiro , his native city. He stayed there for three years before moving to Nacional Montevideo in Uruguay . After only one year there, he went on to Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro, where he only stayed one year before he went to the Boca Juniors from Argentina's capital Buenos Aires . In La Boca , he nevertheless stayed for two years. Then he joined Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, where he experienced another six years of his professional career. In 1943 he went on to the Corinthians in Sao Paulo. In 1947 he returned to his hometown club Bangu AC and ended his football career in 1948 at the age of 35.

In the Brazilian national soccer team Domingos da Guia came to 30 missions between 1931 and 1946. With the Selecao he took part in the 1938 World Championships in France . There, Brazil was eliminated in the semi-finals against eventual world champions Italy , after Poland (after extra time) and Czechoslovakia (in a replay) had been defeated. Domingos played all four of the Brazilian team's games at the World Cup . In the semi-final duel with Silvio Piola he carelessly caused the penalty - the third penalty he caused during the tournament - which led to the Italians 2-1 victory. On the other hand, Domingos da Guia rightly complained that he was exposed to violent provocations from Piola from the start.

Four years earlier, at the 1934 World Cup in Italy, coach Luís Vinhaes did not call him into the squad. He ended his national team career in 1946 after 30 games in which he scored no goals.
