history

middle Ages

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1054, when Emperor Heinrich III. the place Marcholfsheim with the associated living quarters transferred to Emehard from the house of the Counts of Comburg-Rothenburg and later Bishop of Würzburg. From 1088 Markelsheim belonged to the diocese of Würzburg . The village was temporarily the fiefdom of the von Hohenlohe-Brauneck family , then owned by the Counts of Schwarzenburg. In 1411 they had to sell the place to the Teutonic Order because of war debts . At this time, Markelsheim was part of the Neuhaus office in the Mergentheim master class .

Modern times

Witch trials in the 17th century

From the witch persecution in Markelsheim from 1617 to 1638 91 victims are known by name. 81 did not survive the witch trials . On May 8, 1628, Johann Bernhardt , the nine-year-old son of the mayor Bernhardt Reichhardt, was executed.

Markelsheim since the 19th century

In 1809 Markelsheim came to the Kingdom of Württemberg and was assigned to the Mergentheim Oberamt . Since 1938 Markelsheim belonged to the Mergentheim district. On January 1, 1972, Markelsheim was incorporated into the city of Bad Mergentheim together with Apfelbach , Althausen , Löffelstelzen and Neunkirchen . As in the context of on 1 January 1973 Württemberg Baden-district reform the county Mergentheim was dissolved Markelsheim part in the sequel to the newly formed Tauber district , which its present name on 1 January 1974 Main-Tauber-Kreis received.

Religions

Christianity

The predominantly Catholic Markelsheim was incorporated into the newly founded Diocese of Rottenburg (today Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart ) after the transition to Württemberg . The services of the Catholic parish of St. Kilian, which belongs to the Mergentheim deanery , take place mainly in the Kilian's church from 1959. There is also the mountain church of St. Margareta on Engelsberg.

Today's parish church already had at least three previous churches at the site of the cemetery. The first documented church was built in the Romanesque style and was replaced by a church that was declared dilapidated as early as 1615. A new church was built until 1668. This church became too small for the steadily growing community in the 20th century, which is why it was decided to build a new church again. This church was built in a new location by Philipp Olkus until 1959 . Among other things, it contains the baptismal font from 1583. A Beghine monastery on Mount Engelsberg probably existed in Markelsheim from the 13th century . It was first mentioned in a document in 1267. The monastery mainly looked after children, the sick and the poor in the village. It went down after a peasant war storm .

The Protestant parish of Markelsheim, which was only founded in 2001, belongs to the Weikersheim church district . There is no church of its own. The services are therefore mostly held in the neighboring village of Elpersheim. The local evangelical parish together with Markelsheim form an overall parish.
