He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Frederick , the Iron Cross 1st Class and, on April 13, 1917, the Knight's Cross of the Royal Württemberg Military Merit Order. In 1939 he was reactivated and appointed commander of the 5th construction replacement battalion (in Schwäbisch Gmünd). He returned from American captivity in 1946 . He was temporarily based in Stuttgart-Feuerbach, in Fellbach , and later in Schwäbisch Gmünd .

Buildings and designs

Tower of the Church of the Precious Blood in Weikersheim

In 1923 the foundation stone of the Church of St. Johannes in Fellbach, which Olkus had designed, was laid. The building was only considered an emergency church, but should not offer space for less than 400 believers. It was consecrated by Joannes Baptista Sproll in autumn 1923 . On March 2, 1944, the church was badly damaged in an air raid. From 1948 it was rebuilt. The hall church was extended and received two aisles. In addition, the choir and the transverse tower were only built in the post-war period. In 1958, the St. Franziskus parish center followed, which, like the redesign of St. John's Church, had been planned by Philipp Olkus.

In 1926 his competition design for a new building for the district hospital in Waiblingen , which he had created together with Karl Haug from Fellbach, was purchased.

In the early 1950s, Olkus designed the St. Antonius Church in Waiblingen .

The church of St. Andreas in Weinstadt -Endersbach dates from 1954 . Originally, “the church interior was characterized by balanced proportions and careful lighting”, it made a “solemn impression despite all the frugality”.

In 1958/1959 the church of St. Kilian in Markelsheim was built according to Olkus' plans.

The self- supporting roof of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Rommelshausen , which was built in 1959, aroused suspicion among those commissioned with the construction and was intensified by them on their own initiative.

The Maria Königin church in the Schwäbisch Gmünder district of Rehnenhof-Wetzgau dates from 1960 . This church was the 200th new building in the Diocese of Rottenburg after the Second World War.

In 1961/1962 the Catholic Church of the Precious Blood in Weikersheim was built according to plans by Olkus.

The Catholic parish church To Our Lady in Eningen , Olkus designed together with the Reutlingen architect Bernhard Kolditz. It was inaugurated in 1963.

In addition to sacred buildings, Olkus also planned secular buildings. A two-story house was built for Jakob Stern in 1929 on the property at Esslinger Strasse 2 in Fellbach.
