Dinorah Varsi (born November 15, 1939 in Montevideo ; died June 17, 2013 in Berlin ) was a Uruguayan pianist.

life and work

Dinorah Varsi was considered a child prodigy and appeared in concerts at an early age, supported by Erich Kleiber , among others . She stayed in the USA in the early 1960s , then went to Paris and Switzerland to join Géza Anda . Most recently Varsi lived in Davos and Berlin.

In 1959 she won the Jorge de Lalewicz Competition in Buenos Aires , in 1962 first prize at the Maria Canals International Music Competition and in 1967 the International Clara Haskil Piano Competition in Lucerne . As part of her international career, which included concerts with leading symphony orchestras and conductors, she also acted as a jury member at piano competitions and gave master classes.

At the end of the 1970s she withdrew again completely from concert life and was effectively forgotten. In the 1980s she resumed her concert activities and, in addition to Berlin, Munich and Prague, she could also be heard at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the International Music Festival Echternach and the Ruhr Piano Festival . From 1990 to 1996 she had a teaching position at the Karlsruhe University of Music .

Dinorah Varsi died in Berlin in June 2013 at the age of 73. Her grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend .

Discography

Dinorah Varsi's pianistic and musical legacy is documented by a 2015 release of 40 CDs and DVDs on the Genuin classics label entitled Legacy , which was edited and commented on by musicologist Monica Steegmann . The box was awarded the special prize of the International Classical Music Awards in 2016, placed on the list of the best in the keyboard instruments category by the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik eV and also received a "Diapason d'Or" in April 2016.
