Robert Dinesen
Robert Theodor Louis Camillo Dinesen (born October 23, 1874 in Copenhagen , † March 8, 1972 in Berlin ) was a Danish actor and director of Danish and German silent films, at the same time one of the most successful pioneers of European cinema.
Life
The early years in Denmark
Dinesen began his professional career as an actor in his hometown of Copenhagen and appeared on stage for the first time on his 20th birthday. For over a decade and a half he remained exclusively committed to the theater, but from 1910 he concentrated entirely on the still young medium of film.
At the side of another screen debutante, the future cinema legend Asta Nielsen , Dinesen played his first film role in 1910 in the drama abysses . Shortly afterwards, he made his first film direction with the adaptation of Herman Bang's The Four Devils in 1911. Dinesen remained active both as an actor and director until 1917, preferring to shoot dramas and melodramas as well as adventurous and comedic material. Particularly successful - not only in Denmark but also in Germany - was Dinesen's staging of the first part of a trilogy The Maharaja's Favorite Wife (continued by August Blom and the German Max Mack in 1918 and 1920, respectively) .
Career in Germany
In 1919 Robert Dinesen, whose films continued to be shown in German cinemas even during the First World War , accepted an invitation from Berlin's ' May-Film ' and continued his directing career in the German capital. The main female role of his German debut, " Die Frauen vom Gnadenstein ", was played by the actress Margarete Schön , who would soon become his wife.
Dinesen's successes in Germany were rather moderate, with the dawn of the sound film age he decided - after a total of 163 productions - to withdraw from film directing. Since then he has worked as a film salesman and dedicated himself to painting with passion.
Robert Dinesen died in Berlin in March 1972 at the age of 97. He was buried in the state's own cemetery in Heerstraße in today's Berlin-Westend district (grave location: II-Ur 6-347). He rests there by the side of his wife Margarete Schön, who died in 1985.
