After studying chemistry and medicine at the University of Halle (Saale) , each of which he completed with a doctorate , he practiced as a doctor in Berlin. He wrote as a neurologist for medical journals and fought for health reform.

In 1926 he joined the NSDAP , but was expelled on May 15, 1932. Lungwitz sympathized with the idea of a revision of the Versailles Peace Treaty ; but he recognized the neurotic in Adolf Hitler .

He developed a psychobiology as an independent philosophical and medical anthropology and said "All so-called psychological properties and functions can be demonstrated as biological, i.e. physical". In 1923 Lungwitz first created the term “psychobiology” and published it for the first time in March 1924 (probably independently of the “ psychobiology ” created by Adolf Meyer around the same time in the USA ). He wrote novels and plays.

Since 1908 he was three years older than Anna Elisabeth born. Winkler married. The marriage remained childless. The death of his wife in 1962 tore a large void in his life, which contributed to his increasing loneliness in the last years of his life.

Hans Lungwitz died on June 24, 1967 at the age of 85 in Berlin's Westend Hospital, where he had been taken five days earlier after taking an overdose of sleeping pills. The burial took place on July 8, 1967 at the Heerstrasse cemetery in Berlin-Westend . The grave has been preserved (grave location: II-W-4-Ur 8-238).

The Hans Lungwitz Foundation and the Psychobiological Society cherish his memory .

At the Hans Lungwitz Institute for Psychobiological Analysis and Cognitive Therapy eV the psychobiological theory of neuroses founded by Lungwitz is taught and applied therapeutically.
