Rainer Hesse (born March 28, 1938 in Königsberg ) is a German and Dutch poet and author of scientific works and literary translator. As a technical chemist, he worked as a department head in various laboratories .

Hesse conducts in-depth linguistic and written studies on the Chinese character reform and has published four academic papers in this area. In his main work, the reference dictionary of Chinese characters, he arranges all modern characters according to the column method he developed . He is revolutionizing the retrieval of characters, which is more convenient, time-saving and clearer than all previous classification systems of Chinese dictionaries. In addition, with the work he makes a general contribution to the architectural typology of Chinese writing.

He also translates poems by Belgian authors from Flemish into German. He writes himself, mainly tanka , haiku and other forms of poetry, and has already published nine volumes of poetry. He also regularly contributes to anthologies.

Hesse lived in Amsterdam from 2000 to 2018 . Now he lives in Hamburg .
