Yoshikazu Mera

Yoshikazu Mera ( Japanese 米 良 美 一 , Mera Yoshikazu ; born May 21, 1971 in Miyazaki Prefecture ) is a Japanese opera singer ( countertenor ).

Life

Yoshikazu Mera graduated from Senzoku Gakuen College as the best. In the third year of his vocal studies he switched from tenor to countertenor. In October 1992 he sang the solo part in Gioacchino Rossini's Petite messe solenelle , and in March 1994 the countertenor solo in Leonard Bernstein's Skylark under the direction of Kazuyoshi Akiyama.

Mera won first prize at the 8th Yamanashi Early Music Competition in May 1994 and the 6th Tochigi Music Festival award . He was interested in Japanese artistic singing and won third prize at the 6th Sōgakudo Competition for Japanese artistic singing ( 奏 楽 堂 日本 歌曲 コ ン ク ー ル ) in 1995. Mera often appears as a soloist with the Bach Collegium Japan , where he performs baroque music under the direction of Masaaki Suzuki .
