Karlsson on the Roof is a Swedish children's film from 1974 .

The film is based on the book Karlsson vom Dach by Astrid Lindgren , also known as the author of Pippi Longstocking and Michel from Lönneberga .

action

The 8-year-old Svante Svantesson, known by everyone as "Eric", lives with his parents and his two older siblings in a large Swedish city. He has wanted his own dog for a long time, but instead one day Karlsson appears in front of his window, a plump boy with a propeller on his back who lets him fly and who allegedly lives in a house on the roof. A kind of friendship begins between the two, but this is always tarnished by Karlsson's pranks. Little Eric always has to stand up for it, because when his parents enter his room, Karlsson has suddenly disappeared. Only at the end of the film did the family discover Karlsson, whereupon they swore never to tell anyone about it in order to avoid a rush of press.

main characters

Svante (Lillebror) Lillebror is 8 years old. His greatest wish is a dog because he loves dogs very much. Many pictures of them hang in his room. Although he has some school friends, he usually doesn't feel like playing with them, even if he is bored at home. When he meets Karlsson, he becomes his best friend, even if he often annoys him with pranks or mean sayings. He often tries to introduce his new friend to his family, but it never comes because Karlsson keeps disappearing at the crucial moment. So his parents think for a long time that he would just make up Karlsson.

Karlsson Karlsson is a "man in his prime" who lives in a house above the rooftops of the city and has a propeller on his back that he can turn with a button on his stomach and fly. The figure of Karlsson shows some parallels to Pippi Longstocking . Just like them, he lives alone, without parents and has superhuman abilities, like flying. However, there are also big differences, because Pippi is generally very friendly and helpful, Karlsson, on the other hand, is very self-absorbed, not very helpful and if someone does him a favor, he immediately finds a reason to complain anyway. In very rare situations you notice that Karlsson is not as cold and heartless as he seems. He gives a self-painted picture the title "Portrait of a very lonely, small, red rooster". This could indicate that Karlsson also has lonely moments when he wants a family like Eric's has. He also pretends to be sick so that Eric can look after him "like a mother". Karlsson finds it difficult to tolerate feelings and when he does, he is very surprised: "Yes, I like you. Even though you're just a stupid little boy. That's very strange, I want to know why." (When he is asked by Eric whether he likes him) Although Karlsson looks outwardly like a boy, he already seems to be an adult. This is supported by his light hair and statements such as: "I'm a man in my prime ..." Everything Karlsson does himself seems to like him extremely well. Very often he uses the beginning of a sentence: "I am the best in the world ...". He also thinks he's extremely smart and handsome. On the other hand, he likes to ape Eric when he scolds him for hatching another prank. When Eric's parents come, Karlsson disappears quickly. He later has the excuse that he should have "inspected his house".

Reviews

"Astrid Lindgren film adaptation, which, although formally demanding and not consistently consistent in logic, offers entertainment worth seeing even for younger children."
