content

The main character in this book is the four-year-old Lotta, who wants a real bike for her fifth birthday. Her older siblings Jonas and Mia-Maria already have real bicycles, but Lotta only has one tricycle. Lotta's parents, however, think that Lotta should ride it a little longer before she gets a real bike. Lotta has a completely different opinion and therefore decides to 'pug' a bike if she doesn't get one for free.
On her birthday she gets lots of great gifts (including toy cars, a picture book, a skipping rope, a swing and a bracelet), but not a bike. Lotta is disappointed, but she knows where to find a bike: in Aunt Berg's shed, who lives in the house next door. When Aunt Berg is taking her afternoon nap, Lotta sneaks into the shed, fetches the bike, which is much too big for her, and rushes down Noisemaker Street with it. But since Lotta doesn't know how to brake a bicycle, she crashes into the hedge of Aunt Berg's house and ends up in the rose bushes. Lotta is ashamed that she took the bike, but Aunt Berg doesn't blame her for it. But then Lotta notices that she has lost her new bracelet and is very sad.
In the evening, Lotta's father comes home from work and actually brings a bike for Lotta. It's old, used, and cheap, but Lotta is more happy about it than about any other gift. Finally, Aunt Berg finds Lotta's bracelet.
