background
The book was first published in 1959 in Sweden under the title Sunnanäng by Rabén & Sjögren . In Germany the book with the title Klingt meine Linde was published in 1960 by Oetinger Verlag. Anna-Liese Kornitzky translated the book from Swedish into German. The book was illustrated by Ilon Wikland . All stories begin with “A long time ago, in the days of poverty, there was ...”, in Swedish “För länge sen i fattigdomens dagar, var där ...”.
The story of Junker Nils von Eka was not in the first German edition of the book, but was only added to the book in editions from 1990 onwards. In an exchange of letters with Louise Hartung , Astrid Lindgren reports that Friedrich Oetinger found the story unsuitable for German children and did not want to include it in the book Klingt meine Linde . The sacrifice of the Junker Nils von Eka for his King Magnus would, in his opinion, awaken narcissistic thoughts in young people. The correspondence is in the book I Lived Too! to read.
All stories from the fairy tale collection were also published individually as picture books or novels in Sweden and other countries. In Germany, only one picture book was published on the stories Sonnenau and Klingt meine Linde . All the stories were later published in other books, such as Stories and Fairy Tales , Astrid Lindgren Told , etc.
In Sweden, all stories were published in audio book versions. The stories were read by Astrid Lindgren.
