action

Göran has been tied to his bed with a sick leg for a year. When he overhears one evening that his mother tells his father that Göran will probably never be able to walk again, he is desperate. But that very evening he got a visit from Mr. Lilienstengel from the land of twilight. He flies with Göran to the land of twilight. There Göran eats sweets that grow on trees, drives a tram, visits the king, drives a bus, dances and sings. Then Mr. Lilienstengel brings Göran home. He's no longer sad about his sick leg. Because every evening at the hour of dawn, Mr Lilienstengel comes back and brings Göran to the land of dawn and there Göran can fly!

History of origin

Mr. Lilienstengel (in the original: Mr. Liljonkvast) was a fantasy friend of Lindgren's daughter Karin. As a little flying old man, he visited her in her room in the evening. Lindgren's daughter explained that Mr. Lilienstengel could not be seen by anyone else as he flew away and hid as soon as someone entered the room. Mr. Lilienstengel is a more pleasant and friendly forerunner of Karlsson vom Dach , who, according to Astrid Lindgren, Mr. Lilienstengel later transformed into.

In the Land of Twilight is set near Astrid Lindgren's apartment, Dalagatan 46 in Stockholm . In front of the Odenplan subway station on the north side of Odengatan there is a row of houses where the fairy tale begins. From there the protagonists move via Stockholm. You will see the old town with the royal palace, the pleasure island Djurgården , the Klaraviertel, the Kronobergspark, the Volkspark Skansen and visit the island Stadsholmen with the royal castle.

Publications

The first time was dusk in the country in 1949 in the collection of fairy tales Nils Karlsson Pyssling (German language edition: In the forest no robbers are ) released. In 1950 Astrid Lindgren was awarded the Nils Holgersson plaque for this book .

In 1969 the story appeared in Germany as a picture book Herr Lilienstengel with illustrations by Hans-Joachim Krantz . In 1994 the picture book was published in Sweden, with illustrations by Marit Törnqvist . This edition was translated into German and published in 1996. This edition has been reprinted repeatedly since then. The edition with the illustrations by Hans-Joachim Krantz, on the other hand, is out of print and can only be used for high collector prices.

The fairy tale was shown several times as a play in Germany. In 2000 it was premiered at the Braunschweig State Theater . In 2014 In the Land of Twilight was performed as a puppet play in Kirchheim. The puppet theater piece was later shown in the Munich puppet theater. In Altenberge, the fairy tale concert of the music school was dedicated to Astrid Lindgren's story with cello music.

reception

Silke Schnettler from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praises the new edition with the illustrations by Marit Törnqvist . She believes that text and images complement each other “in a unique way”. Schnettler thinks that on the one hand the story is deeply sad, on the other hand it gives comfort. "With the power of his imagination" the boy can "free himself from the oppressive reality."

The Focus lists In the Land of Twilight among the top seven books for young readers. The magazine describes the book as “one of the classics' most beautiful dream stories” and “an enchanting picture book”.

When Lindgren biographer Birgit Dankert from the time of her favorite scene in a is asked by Lindgren's books, she calls a scene from In the Land of Twilight . In this, Mr. Lilienstängel responded to all of Göran's fears and concerns with the reassuring sentence “does not matter in the land of twilight”. Even when the two of them flew over Stockholm and Göran was afraid because he said that he couldn't do everything like that, the reassuring sentence "everything doesn't matter" comes along. Then it would run down her back Dankert and she breathed deeply.

The book is recommended by organizations of care assistance (Superhands der Johanniter ), palliative medicine and hospices (Palliative Center Unna, Kinder- und Jugendhospiz Regenbogenland ).
