Marit Törnqvist (born January 19, 1964 in Uppsala , Sweden ) is a Swedish-Dutch illustrator for children's books, as well as a set designer and author. She was best known for her drawings in Astrid Lindgren's books .

life and career

Marit Törnqvist is the daughter of Egil Törnqvist , a professor of Scandinavian studies at the University of Amsterdam and an academic literary critic. Her mother is the author and illustrator Rita Törnqvist-Verschuur .

Törnqvist moved to the Netherlands at the age of five, where she still lives today. Her mother translated the books of the Swedish children's author Astrid Lindgren into Dutch. As a result, Törnqvist came into contact with Lindgren's literature early on.

From 1982 to 1987 Törnqvist studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie , the art academy in Amsterdam. With her mother, Marit Törnqvist illustrated her first book The Christmas Carp (Swedish: Julkarpen ) in 1989 . This was created after a joint visit to Prague at Christmas time. At the same time Törnqvist applied in Sweden as an illustrator for some of Astrid Lindgren's books and was initially allowed to illustrate As the Bäckhultbauer drove into town ( När Bäckhultarn for till stan ). Further assignments followed, on which she was able to work closely with the Swedish author.

In 1995 Törnqvist wrote and illustrated the book A Little Love Story (Swedish: Liten berättelse om kärlek ). This was awarded the Dutch literature prize Zilveren Griffel in 1996.

Törnqvist has two daughters. She supports refugee children and adults both professionally and privately.
