Polly helps the grandmother , also Polly Patent or Susi Unverzagt ( Swedish Kajsa Kavat hjälper mormor ) is a story by Astrid Lindgren .

One day, a three-month-old baby is put in front of a woman's door with a request to look after the child because he has no one else. The woman takes care of the baby and calls it Polly Patent because it already looks patent as a baby. From now on Polly only calls the woman grandmother. The grandmother lives with Polly in a beautiful house with a small garden. Grandmother makes sweets that she sells in the market. When Polly was six, her grandmother injured her leg. Now it is suddenly up to Polly to sell the sweets and to arrange everything in the household. Polly manages to sell all the sweets at the market, and she's also good at the house. As a reward, her grandmother gives her the doll for Christmas that Polly has always wanted.

The story was first published in 1950 in a short story collection called Kajsa Kavat . It was later published as a stand-alone picture book, illustrated by Ilon Wikland . The book has been translated into many languages ​​including English, Italian and German. While the girl's Swedish name is Kajsa Kavat, she has a different name in other countries: Brenda Brave (English), Greta Grintosa (Italian) and Polly Patent (German).

In Germany, the book was also rewritten as a play that was shown in the Gütersloh theater . One of the attractions of Astrid Lindgren's World is also about Polly Patent and her grandmother.

Reviews

The Fachhochschulteam.de thinks that the book is educationally very valuable. It deals with topics such as becoming independent, helping and supporting other people, as well as the "coexistence of generations". Astrid Lindgren writes in "very graphic and child-friendly language". Ilon Wikland succeeds in reproducing the essential statements of the text with the "colorful and child-friendly images" in such a way that children can easily follow them. The picture book is suitable for children from four years of age.
