Japi from Holland (original title: Jackie bor i Holland ) is the title of a book by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren , with photos by Anna Riwkin-Brick . In 1963 the book was published by Rabén & Sjögren . In the same year the Oetinger Verlag published the book in Germany.

Japi lives in Holland in a city by the sea. His father is a fisherman, sometimes Japi accompanies him when fishing.

Japi would like a bicycle, but his parents can't afford it. The other children all have bicycles and ride together to the headland where the queen's sailing yacht is supposed to pass. Japi looks sadly after them.

But his girlfriend Elleke can distract him first and the two play together with the rabbits in the garden. Then they try to reach the headland on foot. However, they are too late and the boat is already gone. When Japi tells his father about it, he says that he wants to buy Japi a bike, but will have to save for a long time.

But Japi's grandparents have a surprise for Japi. With their savings they buy him a bike. Japi is overjoyed to present this to his girlfriend Elleke.

Japi from Holland is the eighth of a total of 15 books from the Children of Our Earth series . The story is based on real events. However, some things have changed.

Documentary from Israel

In Israel, the Children of our Earth series , which also includes Japi from Holland , was a great success. The latter was also based on the translations of the poet Leah Goldberg . In 2014, Israeli director Dvorit Shargal made a 50-minute documentary entitled Where is Elle-Kari and what happened to Noriko-san? . This film also tells about Japi's whereabouts after the end of the book. In addition, "Japi" shows the places where the photos were taken. He tells about his first bicycle, which he received from Astrid Lindgren for his birthday, and reads a letter that Astrid Lindgren wrote to him later. Astrid Lindgren recalls her visit to Holland, during which she wrote the book together with Anna Riwkin.

Bjornen Sobel thinks the book gives an insight into the Netherlands and their lifestyle in the 1950s. This great photo book shows a completely different environment. It makes a very attractive picture book for children of all ages.
