action

As a child, director Dvorit Shargal read Anna Riwkin-Bricks books Elle Kari and Noriko-San . These books showed her the lives of other girls in other distant lands. She identified with the protagonists, wanted skis like Elle Kari from the book of the same name, or wear a kimono like Noriko-san. When she opened her former favorite books in adulthood, Shargal found a letter she wrote to Noriko-san. However, this was returned to you with the note: Address unknown. Thereupon she decides to go looking for the protagonists from the books. Noriko-San is particularly important to her.

The search for Noriko-san turns out to be more difficult than expected, after all, Shargal only has a first name. So she first tries to find Ella Kari, a girl from the indigenous Sami people . Shargal actually finds an Elle Kari via an internet search. It turns out that this Elle Kari is the daughter of the writer Elly Jannes . It is named after the protagonist from Anna Riwkin-Brick and Elly Janne's book. After doing an interview with her, Shargal finally meets Elle Kari from the book. She tells her about her life, shows her more photos of Anna Riwkin-Brick and a documentary about her daughter from the 1970s. Shargal also reports how the Sami indigenous people developed after the 1950s.

To find out more about Anna Riwkin-Brick, Shargal searches the archives of the Swedish National Library in Stockholm. There she learns that Anna Rivkin wrote books together with the Israeli author Leah Goldberg . In Israel she meets the protagonists Anat, Shaul, Daniel and Miriam from the books Eli from Israel and Mirjam from Israel in the series Children of Our Earth , who tell her about their work with Anna Rivkin.

She later continues to look for her favorite protagonist, Noriko-san. She learns that the book, like many other books from the Children of Our Earth book series, was written by Astrid Lindgren . In the state library in Stockholm, in the Astrid Lindgren archive, she does not find any information about Noriko, but a letter from the protagonist in the book Japi from Holland . She meets this one. He tells her about his work with Anna Riwkin and Astrid Lindgren. In addition, "Japi" shows the places where the photos were taken. He tells about his first bicycle, which he received from Astrid Lindgren for his birthday, and reads a letter that Astrid Lindgren wrote to him later. Astrid Lindgren recalls her visit to Holland, during which she wrote the book together with Anna Riwkin.

When Shargal publicly searches for Noriko-san, Eva, another protagonist from Noriko-san, answers . Together they try to find Noriko-San. You fly to Japan and visit the places where the photos were taken. They also ask locals about Noriko-san and eventually turn to newspapers and Japanese television. Through a newspaper article they finally find Noriko-san and meet her.

background

Where is Elle Kari and what happened to Noriko-san? is the debut film from the director Dvorit Shargal. Shargal originally worked as a journalist, but gave up her work in order to search for the heroines of her childhood from the Children of Our Earth photo book series and to document this search on film. Children of our Earth tells of the life of children in different countries, such as Sweden , Japan , Israel etc. The director was particularly interested in finding Noriko-San from the book of the same name. But her search turned out to be extremely difficult because she only had a first name. In her search, she came across other protagonists from the same book series and dealt with the life of the series' photographer Anna Riwkin-Brick .

The documentary was shot in different countries and continents over a period of four years. Shargal first met Ella Kari in Jokkmokk (Sweden), then traveled to Israel and Tokyo.

The film led to nine stories of the children were our earth series reissued in Israel, including: Elle Kari , Noriko-san , Sia lives on Kilimanjaro , Lilibet, the circus child , Japi from Holland , wanthai from Thailand , Salima cashmere , Eli from Israel and Gennet from Ethiopia .

Eva Crafoord-Larsen and Noriko Shiraishi, the protagonists from Noriko-San , came into contact again through the film. In an interview, they said they had become good friends. So they would have met again in Tokyo and Sweden after the shoot was over.

Dvorit Shargal is now showing the film in Israeli schools and reporting to children about it.

Reviews

Eithan We initially had little interest in watching the film because he did not know the books. In retrospect, he was thrilled with the film. It is recommended and worth seeing, even without the audience having to know the books. It is exciting to accompany the director on a worldwide journey: from Israel to Sweden, to Lapland, to the Netherlands, back to Israel, to the USA and to Japan. You can laugh and cry with her. Ofer Libergal thinks it's a film that deals with the past, reveals beauty in childhood, deals with childhood heroes, and shows that life goes on despite everything. Amos Lassen adds that the film is reminiscent of the childhood that has disappeared, the childhood of the children from the books, the director of the film and the children from a time before television in Israel, when traveling to strange places was a distant dream. Lynne Davis praises the director's perseverance. If the audience followed her step by step to Tokyo and saw how her search for Noriko-san bore fruit, it would be very touching.

Follow-up films

Dvorit Shargal made two more films that deal with the books from the Children of Our Earth series by Anna Riwkin-Brick .

Africa! Sia lives on Kilimanjaro

The film Africa! Sia lives on Kilimanjaro ( Hebrew סיאה הילדה מאפריקה), in which the director went in search of Sia from the book Sia lives on Kilimanjaro ( Sia bor på Kilimandjaro ) and reported on her life after the book was published. For this purpose, Shargal drove again to the Astrid Lindgren Archives in Stockholm. She spoke to Astrid Lindgren's daughter Karin Nyman to learn more about Anna Riwkin-Brick and her books. However, Karin Nyman Shargal couldn't tell much about it. At a screening of Where is Elle Kari and what happened to Noriko-san? One viewer explained that she had the name and email address of "Sia" from Sia who lives on Kilimanjaro . The email address turned out to be wrong, but Shargal managed to find Sia, whose real name is Erica Malekia, anyway. She met their family, most of whom appeared in the book, and reported on their culture and life in Tanzania . She also met other people from the Chagga tribe , to which "Sia" belong.

Where is Lilibet the Circus child and what happened in Honolulu?

On October 20, 2017, Where is Lilibet the Circus child and what happened in Honolulu? ( Hebrew איפה לילבס ילדת הקרקס ומה קרה בהונולולו?), a film that dealt with the whereabouts of Lilibet from Lilibet, the circus child ( Lilibet, cirkusbarn ) and Mokihana from Mokihana ( Mokihana bor på Hawaii ). Shargal's search for the protagonists of the Children of Our Earth series began again in Stockholm. There she found out that Lilibet from Lilibet, the circus kid, had performed in a circus called Cirkus Scott . She visited the circus, the ringmaster did not know Lilibet, but promised to ask around after her. In the meantime, Shargal met Eva Brick, Anna Riwkin-Brick's niece. She continued to concern herself with the family and the life of the photographer. She found out that Anna Riwkin-Brick had flown to Hawaii with her sister Eugénie Söderberg to create a photo book about the girl Mokihana. Immediately she set out on the journey. At first her search seemed unsuccessful, but then she met an older man who knew the book and reported that Anna and her sister lived in Hawaii for several months and that his son was also photographed for the photo book. The search near Mokihana turned out to be more difficult than expected. But shortly before she left, Shargal managed to meet her. Shargal came directly from Hawaii to Sweden, where she learned the name of Lilibet and her father. She also came into contact with Lilibet's half-brother. She learned that Lilibet is actually called Ingrid Heinrich and now lives in Bussum, in Holland. Shargal visited this in Holland. Ingrid Heinrich told Shargal about working with Astrid Lindgren and Anna Riwkin-Brick, as well as their life in the circus.
