action

A snow-covered farm: It's Christmas and the children should go to bed. Emma reminds us, however, that grits have to be placed in front of the house for Tomte Tummetott. Her two older brothers laugh at her for not believing in Tomte. Emma bravely trudges through the snow to put the groats and gingerbread on a tree stump in the yard. As soon as the house is quiet, the surroundings are lively. The fox sneaks around to get a full belly for Christmas too. His goal is the chicken coop. Tomte Tummetott is also on the way and is being informed of the fox's plans by two mice. He breaks off a piece of gingerbread that the mice are supposed to use to wake the dog so that it can chase the fox away. The plan works. Tomte, who spreads the hope of spring among the animals in winter, goes into the stable and talks to the sheep and the cow. He gives everyone a few seconds of spring sunshine and the sleeping cat a few butterflies.

The fox has not yet given up hope of a chicken. He goes into the barn, but the cow explains to him that it is impossible to get into the hen house. Only the stupid sheep does not understand their strategy and gives the fox a tip on how to easily get into the stable. The fox also uses a trick to lock the dog in the cowshed. While the fox is preparing to break into the henhouse, it is again the mice who warn Tomte Tummetott. He frees the dog, but sends him to Emma's family's house. Emma had got up curiously to wait for Tomte, but fell asleep in the armchair. Your doll has fallen to the ground and is now threatening to catch fire from glowing ashes. The dog can put out the flames. Tomte, in turn, pulls the fox out of the hen house. He knows how hungry the fox is and gives him his groats to eat. Emma sees him doing it and wakes the family, who only discovers the fox above the bowl of fruit. In front of Emma, everyone pretends to have seen Tomte. However, he has long been walking around and is convinced that animals and people are sleeping peacefully on this winter night.

criticism

On the occasion of the awarding of the film with the rating “particularly valuable”, the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) found that the film team “met the characters beautifully with an infinite amount of attention to detail”; Tomte Tummetott and the fox is a "beautiful little, pleasantly modest cartoon. That is why it deserves the highest rating, because doing the simple things well is always the hardest. "

The Berliner Zeitung wrote that “Lindgren's picture book world [...] has come to life wonderfully here”. "A successful premiere at the end of the Lindgren year and a thoroughly successful film version of picture books," said the NZZ .
