Harald Wiberg (born March 1, 1908 in Ankarsrum , Sweden ; † August 15, 1986 in Falköping ) was a Swedish illustrator for children's books, as well as a painter and caricaturist. He is known, among other things, for his illustrations of Tomten books (Gnome books) or various Christmas books by Astrid Lindgren .

life and career

Wiberg was born in Ankarsrum in 1908 . Wiberg attended the Stockholm School of Dramatics (Stockholms dramatiska Högskola). Later he also studied in France and Italy. He particularly illustrated animal, landscape and children's books. Most of his illustrations show Scandinavian landscapes, animals and traditional mythological figures. In the 1960s he became known to a wider audience in Sweden through his appearances on the nature documentary show Korsnäsgårde . He became internationally successful, among other things, through his illustrations of the Tomten books (Wichtelbücher): Tomte Tummetott (1960) and Tomte and the Fox (1965). The original poems by Viktor Rydberg and Karl-Erik Forsslund for Wigberg's illustrations were printed in the Swedish edition of these works . In the international editions, however, a text by Astrid Lindgren appeared , which she had written based on the poems for the illustrations. The success of these works prompted Wiberg to write and illustrate his own tomten book entitled Gammaldags jul . The book was translated into English ( Christmas at the tomten's farm ), but there is no German translation. He also illustrated another work by Viktor Rydberg with Björn's Adventures on Christmas Eve ( Lille Viggs äventyr på julafton , 1980). In 1976 he received the Elsa Beskow plaque for his work The Great Snow Storm (Den stora snöstormen, 1975) . He died on August 15, 1986 in Falköping .
