Svensson began his career in 1988 with Rögle BK , who at that time played in the second highest division in Sweden, Division 1 (now HockeyAllsvenskan ). The offensive player was already a member of the Swedish team from the 1989/90 season and rose with the club in the 1991/92 season in the Elitserien , the highest Swedish league. Svensson had a large share in this success with 30 points scored in 38 games. This was followed by four more years with his home club, before he received a contract offer from Eisbären Berlin in the German Ice Hockey League in the summer of 1996. The Swede decided on the offer and consequently went on the ice for the Berliners.
With the Eisbären the striker was able to achieve 2nd place in the IIHF Continental Cup in 1997 and 1999 . When his contract was not renewed at the end of the 1998/99 season , he joined the newly founded Munich Barons. With the Munich team, the then 29-year-old placed second in the table after the main round and won the German championship after a 3-1 final win after games against the Kölner Haie . Svensson completed 66 league games this season and was able to score 45 times. Especially in the play-offs, he could show good statistics. He scored nine points in 12 games and also posted plus / minus statistics of +2.
In the 2000/01 season he put his skates on again for league competitor Kassel Huskies before returning to Sweden in 2001 to his former club Rögle BK, for which he was on the ice between 1988 and 1996. This was followed by four seasons at Rögle BK and one at fourth division Åstorp Grizzlys. He then ended his active ice hockey career at the age of 36 after the 2005/06 season. After initially working as head coach of the U18 team in the Rögle BK's junior division from 2008, Svensson was temporarily hired in the 2010 calendar year as the Rögle BK's head coach as a replacement for the dismissed Gunnar Persson during the Kval series. With the men's team, however, he rose to the HockeyAllsvenskan. Subsequently, Svensson took over the U18 team again within the club, before he was promoted to managing director of Rögle BK in 2012.

Svensson was nominated in 1990 for the Swedish junior national team , with which he took part in the Junior World Championship in Finland in the same year . There he reached fifth place with his team, which meant relegation. The left shooter was used in three games and scored no scorer point.
