Peter and Petra (original title: Peter och Petra ) is a children's film by Agneta Elers-Jarleman based on the script by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren . It is based on the story Peter and Petra .

Gunnar is in his classroom and has to read a text in front of the whole class, something that Gunnar doesn't like to do at all. He doesn't read very well and the other kids laugh at him. Suddenly there is a knock at the door and two tiny little children stand in front of the door. They introduce themselves to the class as troll children and tell the teacher that they would like to attend class. The teacher is surprised by the appearance of the two, but immediately agrees to teach them both. The troll kids named Petra and Peter are very popular with the whole class. The outsider Gunnar, in particular, befriends them. He visits them at their apartment and watches them ice skating. Gunnar also improves reading aloud. But after the Christmas break, Peter and Petra suddenly no longer appear. Her apartment is also empty. The children and the teacher are worried. Then Gunnar receives a letter from Peter and Petra. They say they moved because they got a great house. They also explain that Gunnar is a fine guy. Gunnar is happy about the letter. The teacher suggests visiting them on their next class trip.

In Germany, the film was first broadcast on December 7, 1991 on ZDF. In 2003 the film was released on DVD as the Lindgren Edition: Peter and Petra . In September 2010, the fairy tale and three other Astrid Lindgren film adaptations were released by Universum Film GmbH on a DVD under the title Astrid Lindgren - The most beautiful fairy tales . There were other DVD releases together with other Astrid Lindgren film adaptations under the names: Astrid Lindgren started school and Astrid Lindgren - collector's edition .
criticism
Kino.de describes Peter and Petra as an imaginative Astrid Lindgren film, about the friendship between the boy Gunnar and two troll children. Agneta Elers-Jarleman's film advertises "in slow shots (...) in a partly funny, partly contemplative way for tolerance and friendship" and thus serves "for the youngest film fans both as entertainment and as an educationally valuable parable".
The lexicon of the international film judged that the production was worth seeing, "told in a child-friendly way, with simple means and transparent tricks adequately filmed into a film adaptation of a short story by Astrid Lindgren." She tells "without a pedagogical finger (...) of the harmony of human coexistence and the power of friendship. "
Reinhard Kleber from Kinder- und Jugendfilm Korrespondenz thinks that the film adaptation campaigns for “friendship and tolerance” without “becoming too educational”. Director Agneta Elers-Jarleman succeeds in portraying these values in such a way that even very young viewers would understand them. It also offers the children “more opportunities for daydreams and fantastic ideas”. The pleasant "calm of the story" enables the children to "let their thoughts wander".
