Waldemar Bergendahl

Waldemar Bergendahl (born April 18, 1933 in Årsunda , Gästrikland ) is a Swedish film producer , production manager, recording manager, film director and screenwriter . Bergendahl is known as a producer of films based on the novels of Astrid Lindgren .

life and career

Bergendahl was born in Årsunda on April 18, 1933. He grew up on a farm on Gavlestigen between Årsunda and Gästrike-Hammarby. His parents were farmers with cows, horses, chickens, pigs and many other animals. He later studied in Gävle . From there he moved to Stockholm .

In 1957 Bergendahl lived in a shared apartment with the then production manager of Europafilm. This gave Bergendahl the tip to introduce himself to the film company. Just one year later, Bergendahl was part of the film crew of Fröken April , a film with Gunnar Björnstrand and Gaby Stenberg in the leading roles. Since he did not yet know anything about film work, he got involved wherever he could be useful.

Bergendahl dreamed of becoming an actor, but realized early on that was not suitable for the job. However, wanted to continue to work in the film industry and therefore decided to work as a producer.

In 1963 Bergendahl produced the film Das Rabenviertel . The end of a great love followed in 1967 . In 1984 he started working with Astrid Lindgren and produced Ronja the robber's daughter . His work My Life as a Dog was finally nominated for best film for the British Academy Film Award . However, the award went to the film Sacrifice .

Bergendahl has now produced around 120 films. He worked with Astrid Lindgren , Tage Danielsson , Bo Widerberg , Lasse Hallström , Helena Bergström and many others. In his productions he always chose his employees personally.

In 2010, Bergendahl was awarded the Honor Guldbaggen (Hedersguldbaggen) as a film producer .

Private life

Bergendahl lives in Stockholm. He has two younger sisters. In 2008, Bergendahl was diagnosed with Parkinson's.
