Gennet from Ethiopia (original title: Gennet bor i Etiopien ) is the title of a photo book by the Swedish writer Vera Forsberg with photos by Anna Riwkin-Brick . In 1967 the book was published by Rabén & Sjögren as the twelfth book in the Children of Our Earth series , for which authors such as Astrid Lindgren , Leah Goldberg , Elly Jannes , Eugénie Söderberg and Cordelia Edvardson also contributed the texts. A year later, the Oetinger Verlag published the book in Germany.

Gennet is seven years old and comes from Ethiopia . Its name comes from Amharic and means paradise. When Gennet's little brother Tadesse is bitten by a poisonous snake one day, it's up to Gennet to get help. She is going a long way. She encounters monkeys, vultures and flamingos. As she passes a steep brook with deep water, she receives support from a shepherd boy who helps her across the water. After she finally got to the doctor, he immediately takes her with him in the jeep and drives her to her brother. This one can be saved. As a reward, Gennet is allowed to buy a yellow dress and a pearl necklace at the market.

The book Gennet from Ethiopia comes from Anna Riwkin-Bricks photo book series Children of our Earth . While Riwkin was taking the photos for the book, the Swedish writer Vera Forsberg wrote the text for the book. The book has been translated into many languages ​​including Hebrew, English, Danish and German.

In Israel, the Children of our Earth series , which includes Gennet from Ethiopia , was a great success. The latter was also based on the translations of the poet Leah Goldberg . In 2017, Israeli director Dvorit Shargal made a 50-minute documentary entitled Where is Elle Kari and what happened to Noriko-san? dealing with some of the books in the series. The film resulted in nine stories from the Children of Our Earth series being reprinted in Israel, including Gennet from Ethiopia .

The United States. Education Office recommended the book for students in grades 3 to 5. Elisabeth Wesseling praised the high artistic quality of the book. The New England Reading Association found the book delightful and informative.
