Henya Eugénie Söderberg , later Perls (born March 25, 1903 in Heidelberg , Germany , as Henya Eugénie Riwkin , † January 1973 in New York ) was a Swedish-American journalist , author and translator .

Eugénie Riwkin was the eldest daughter of the businessman Shalom Schender "Alexander" Riwkin (1878–1930). and Frida Perelman (1881–1944) as well as the sister of the photographer Anna Riwkin and the editor Josef Riwkin .

Eugénie Riwkin married the writer Mikael Söderberg (1903-1931) on December 24, 1927 . He was the son of Märta and Hjalmar Söderberg , the brother of the actress Dora , the historian Tom and half-brother of the actress Betty Söderberg .

Living in the United States

After Mikael Söderberg's death, Eugénie Riwkin – Söderberg moved away from Europe. In April 1940 she went on board the Kungsholm from Haiti to Havana and from there on to New York . She settled in New York and reported in an August 1940 letter to Hjalmar Söderberg that there are a lot of great things in the country, but that at the same time she finds it very scary.

Journalist in New York

When Hjalmar Söderberg died, Eugénia Riwkin – Söderberg wrote an article about him in New York - an analysis of himself and his authorship. It is not known where the article was published, but she sent the manuscript to Söderberg's wife in Copenhagen. She wrote a thank you letter explaining that her daughter Betty and son-in-law Hakon Stangerup read the translated version of the article to her. The last letter from Eugénie to Emilie Söderberg is from 1949. Eugéine Riwkin later lived permanently in New York and in 1941 married the well-known antique dealer and gallery owner Hugo Perls . In New York, she continued to work as a journalist, including for Scandinavian newspapers. For the book Mohikana she worked with her sister, the photographer Anna Riwkin . Her third novel, Min son är min , was published in Sweden by Rabén & Sjögren . Until her death, she sent money to Sweden to look after Mikael Söderberg's grave.

At Stony Brook University in Long Island, there is the Eugenie Soderberg Collection , a collection of letters, articles, manuscripts and diaries that have been translated into Russian, Swedish, German, French and English.
