content

Mokihana lives in Hawaii with her friends . Her families originally came to Hawaii from different countries and cultures, but they all speak English. The friends meet almost every day and experience many adventures. They are especially looking forward to the secret birthday party for Anela, who will be ten years old. They have come up with something very special for this. Mokihana draws a picture for them of the dog Iki, whom Anela loves very much. In addition, she and her friends are preparing flower wreaths for the party, which they put on. When her aunt brings Anela to the birthday party, Anela is surprised because she thought everyone had forgotten her birthday. They celebrate together and eat mangoes, pineapples, bananas, papayas, ice cream, cakes and drink orange juice. Anela also gets chicks in a basket as a present. She is overjoyed!

background

The book Mokihana was written in Hawaii . Anna Riwkin-Brick and her sister Eugénie Söderberg lived there for several months. While Riwkin was taking the photos, Söderberg was responsible for the text. More than a hundred photos were taken for one image that appeared in the book. At the time of publication, the book was also regarded as educationally valuable school reading, as it showed how children from originally different cultures treated each other happily and without prejudice. At the Moderna Museet in Stockholm there was an exhibition on Anna Riwkin in 2019, in which the children of our earth series and Mokihana were also presented. This was entitled: The world beyond my suburb .

Documentary from Israel

In Israel, the Children of our Earth series , which also includes Elle Kari , was a great success. The latter was also based on the translations of the poet Leah Goldberg . In 2017, Israeli director Dvorit Shargal made a 50-minute documentary entitled Where is Lilibet the Circus child and what happened in Honolulu? . In the film, the director Shargal tried to find out what happened to Mokihana after the end of the book. She now lives near Honolulu . The director decided not only because of the protagonist to deal with this book from the series, but also because she had dreamed of a trip to Honolulu as a child.

reception

Rose C. Merenda writes in the book Day Care and Early Education (1987) that Mokihana is a great story to introduce school children to life in Hawaii and keep them interested in it. It is especially good because the students can compare Mokihana's life with their own.
