Collective August

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Collective August ( Swedish Lite om Sammelagust ) is a story of Astrid Lindgren .

action

Samuel August lives with his brothers in Småland. However, his siblings only call him collective August. The brothers do a lot together outdoors in nature. In winter they ride their sledges down the slopes. Gathering August wants nothing more than two rabbits. He would like to have a male and a female so that they have many little rabbit children. But the rabbits cost a lot of money and collecting August has far too little of it. One day, when a wholesaler comes to the yard of August's parents, the August asks if he wants to earn money by opening the gates for the wholesaler. Collective August can't believe it when he holds the money, 65 ore, in his hands. He buys two white rabbits from them and even has 25 ore left that he can use for the next few years.

background

In Sweden, the story was first published in 1950 in the short story collection Kajsa Kava (1952, German Sammelaugust and other children ).

In Sweden Astrid Lindgren read the story herself as an audio book. In Germany, the story was read by Manfred Steffen and published on the audio book called Stories .

The story is about Astrid Lindgren's own father Samuel August Ericsson (short: Collective Agust, German: Collective August). He wanted nothing more than a pair of rabbits so that he could earn money for them himself.

The story has also been rewritten into a play. In 2014 and 2015 the play was performed in the Schauburg children's and youth theater in Munich as part of the Unterwegs in Smaland series. The story was performed as a puppet theater in the Kuckucksheim Theater in Heppstädt.
