Karl Gerbel , also Gerbl (born September 10, 1939 in Linz ; † August 3, 1997 ibid) was an Austrian electrical machine builder, child lover functionary and cultural manager .

Life

Karl Gerbel learned the trade of electrical machine builder and joined the Rote Falken in Linz's Franckviertel in the 1950s. Later he became the state secretary of Kinderfreunde Linz. As an SPÖ member and a functionary of the Chamber of Labor , Gerbel became head of the Jägermayrhof , an educational center of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor in Linz.

From 1972 to 1995 he succeeded Theodor Grill as regional chairman of Kinderfreunde Upper Austria, and from 1994 to 1997 its federal chairman. In 1984 he came to the Brucknerhaus as director of the board, succeeding Ernst Kubin. In 1987 he was also appointed as the successor to the previous Brucknerhaus general manager Horst Stadlmayr , thus uniting the previously separate management functions in the person of Gerbel. At the same time he became the managing director of LIVA (Linzer Veranstaltungsgesellschaft mbH), which he remained until his death in 1997. Afterwards the functions of artistic and commercial directors were separated again.

During his tenure as Upper Austrian Kinderfreunde chairman, Gerbel founded the Linz Children's Theater .

He was well networked with Linz SPÖ grandees, he wrote z. B. Forewords to volumes of poetry by the Linz mayor and passionate poet Hugo Schanovsky . As the Brucknerhaus boss, Gerbel was criticized for his leadership style and professional competence. For example, long-time music director Margareta Wöss left the Brucknerhaus in 1987, as did a large number of the staff. As LIVA managing director he was responsible for the annual Ars Electronica festival until 1995 . This was withdrawn from LIVA under Gerbel by Mayor Franz Dobusch , because LIVA was accused of always occupying the artistic direction of Ars Electronica with the same person, namely Peter Weibel .

Marcel Prawy said of Gerbel at his funeral: “He was the last real producer. Gerbel was not a trained musician, he didn't necessarily understand much about music. But he was a passionate organizer. With this he managed to attract excellent people to the Brucknerhaus. "

Karl Gerbel died in 1997 of cancer.
