Dirk Andries Flentrop

Dirk Andries Flentrop (born May 1, 1910 in Zaandam ; † November 30, 2003 in Santpoort-Zuid ) was a Dutch organ builder .

Life

Flentrop was the son of Hendrik Wicher Flentrop (1866-1950), who founded the organ building company Flentrop Orgelbouw in 1903 in Zaandam . This world famous company is active in Europe , the United States and South America and has also built organs in Taiwan and Japan .

In recognition of his services, Flentrop received an honorary doctorate in musicology from Oberlin College ( Ohio ) in 1968 for his pioneering work in classical organ building and later another from Duke University in North Carolina . The restoration of the organs from 1693 and 1735 of the cathedral of Mexico City, carried out from 1975 to 1978, is remarkable . In 1982 he was honored with a book about his work there in the USA.

Flentrop died in November 2003 at the age of 93 at his home in Santpoort-Zuid.

Flentrop's successor was JA Steketee (* 1936) in 1976, until Cees PW van Oostenbrugge (1947–2008) took over management of the company in 1998. After his death, Frits Elshout (* 1952) became the new director and Erik Winkel (* 1971) his deputy. The company's list of works includes over 400 new organs, including 17 organs in Germany and over 100 in the USA.
