Joy is an Austrian dance-pop band.

history

The band Joy was founded in Bad Aussee in 1984 by Andy Schweitzer, Freddy Jaklitsch and Manfred Temmel. A short time later, the trio got a record deal with the Austrian label OK-Musica. The record company commissioned Michael Scheickl , who represented Austria at the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest with the Duo Mess, to support the "three country boys".

Joy's first single , Lost in Hong Kong , was released in February 1985 and missed a hit parade listing. The follow-up single Touch by Touch became a chart hit in Germany and Austria in September 1985. The album Hello was released in 1986 and made the band known in more than 30 countries. A title that was never released as a single, Valerie , became a success in Eastern Europe: in the USSR as a flexi single published by Krugozor magazine, and in Hungary by cover version Te meg en the local group Inflagranty. Because of their apolitical lyrics, Joy were one of the few bands allowed to play behind the Iron Curtain . In 1986 and 1987 the group played in the GDR television show Ein Kessel Buntes .

The second album, Joy and Tears , was created in the summer of 1986 . The single Japanese Girls , which was particularly popular in Asia, was released in advance . The band then went on an Asian tour and played in January and February 1987 in Bangkok , Hong Kong , Singapore , Taiwan and Seoul in front of more than 60,000 spectators, and in Seoul in front of 24,000 people at the Jamsil Olympia Stadium. In 1987 Joy also performed in various European countries, in 1988 the musicians played a few concerts in the USA (mainly for the Chinese-speaking audience). Before that, the ballad Destination Heartbeat , which was also released as a single, was the title music of the ORF - Tatort episode Flucht in den Tod . Keyboard player and songwriter Andy Schweitzer left the group in 1989 and was replaced by Johannes Groebl. In 1996 the album Full of Joy was created , but it was never released.

In 1997 Jaklitsch and Temmel founded the Schlager-Pop-Band Seer , later one of the most successful projects on the Austrian music scene.

Joy played in June 1997 at the Dancing City Festival in Gorky Park in Moscow . In 2002 the band took part in the first Disco-80 festival organized by Autoradio, one of the most popular radio stations in Russia. A break of several years followed.

In 2010, all three members of the original formation decided to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their first success by reuniting. In October 2010 Joy played at the Legends of Retro FM Festival in Moscow, and in November a maxi CD with four new versions of Touch by touch was released .

On July 1, 2011, a new album, Enjoy , was released and reached number 21 in the Austrian charts. It was released in Russia by CD-Land and in Hungary by Hargent Media. On July 15th, 2011 Joy played at the Viljandi Retro Festival in Estonia in front of over 7,000 spectators, who also came from Latvia. Another appearance at the Disco 80 Festival in Moscow followed in November 2011 .
